Beverly Lyne - Peace Through Nursing - TSM
MFP granted $3,495 to further support nurse and global health consultant Beverly Lyne in her peace through nursing work in Uganda.
Teso Safe Motherhood clinic began in 2005 when four nurses said “yes” to helping people displaced by the Ugandan civil war. Beverly Lyne was one of those nurses. The Uganda-staffed clinic cared for over 15,000 Internally Displaced Persons, who had lost their homes, their families - their whole cultural context - to the ravages of the Lord’s Resistance Army.
TSM is a Level III Maternity Center. A totally volunteer staff has provided all but labor and delivery services since the prior funder had to step down in the fall of 2023. Prior to that, the clinic delivered 100-150 babies per month and provided wholistic care to thousands of women and families. Services include: HIV counselling/testing/treatment, antenatal care, family planning, vaccinations, outreach clinics in the surrounding region and health education to all clients. TSM and ASSA now collaborate to incorporate assessment, education, and support to all clients and family members who want to learn how to reduce or stop their alcohol consumption. Alcoholism is currently not widely understood as a disease in this region. “Over-drinkers” are considered to be sinners and are banished until they can stop drinking.
